Useful apps for Edinburgh: navigating, dining, and getting around with your smartphone

Technology helps (but does not replace experience)

Organizingholidays in Edinburghwith the help of the right apps can save you time, money, and stress. Offline maps, real-time transport, reliable weather, restaurant bookings, and even free audio guides. This guide selects the essential (and unnecessary) apps for your trip.

Offline maps and navigation

Google Maps (with offline download)

Free. Before you leave, download the offline map of Edinburgh (Settings → Offline maps → select area). It takes up about 200 MB. Works without a data connection, but does not show real-time traffic.

Maps.me

Free, open source. Offline maps of the entire world, with walking paths (useful for Arthur's Seat and Dean Village). Search works offline.

Citymapper

Free. Best for real-time public transport (buses and trams). Shows how much to walk, where to catch the bus, and any delays. Works only online (uses little data).

Public transport

Lothian Buses (official app)

Free. Shows real-time schedules for all buses, the nearest stops, and the route. You can purchase digital tickets (£5 for a day pass, £2 for a single) and use them by scanning the QR code on the screen.

Edinburgh Trams

Free. Schedules, line map, and ticket purchase (£8 for a single). Especially useful for knowing the last night service.

Uber / Bolt

Free (you pay for the ride). For private taxis. In Edinburgh, Uber is legal and often cheaper than black cabs (£20 airport to city center vs £30). Bolt sometimes has promotions.

City Cabs

App for traditional taxis (black cab). You can book in advance or call immediately. Cost is similar to Uber, but drivers are more experienced.

Weather (essential)

Met Office (UK)

Free. The UK national weather service, more reliable than international apps. Hourly forecasts, chance of rain, wind, and weather alerts.

BBC Weather

Free. Simple interface, reliable forecasts for 14 days.

Both have widgets for the home screen.

Food and restaurants

HappyCow

Free (with ads) or £5 for a lifetime. Essential for vegetarians and vegans: shows restaurants, pubs, and takeaways with plant-based options, filtered by proximity.

TheFork

Free. Restaurant booking with discounts (up to 50% off food). Many restaurants in Edinburgh are listed (Howies, Vittoria, The Tower).

Too Good To Go

Free. Recovers unsold food from restaurants at the end of the day (£3-5 for a surprise bag). Useful for low-cost lunches.

Attractions and audio guides

Edinburgh Castle Official App

Free. Interactive map of the castle, audio guide (in Italian), and information about exhibits. Works offline after download.

VisitScotland

Free. The app of the Scottish tourist board. Suggested itineraries, ongoing events, and deals on attractions. Useful for finding last-minute things to do.

izi.TRAVEL

Free. Audioguides created by users and professionals. There are walking tours of Edinburgh (Royal Mile, New Town, Greyfriars) in Italian. Download them first (they take up space).

Language and translation

Google Translate

Free. Download the offline English package (50 MB). Useful for translating menus or historical plaques (scan with the camera).

SayHi

Free. Voice translation (speak in Italian, translates to English and vice versa). Smoother than Google Translate for short conversations.

Hotel and flight booking

Booking.com/ Airbnb

Free. For hotels, B&Bs, and apartments. Booking often has free cancellation. Airbnb is useful for groups.

Skyscanner

Free. To compare flights, but also hotels and car rentals. Set price alerts.

Useless (or redundant) apps

  • Edinburgh Pass App:the pass itself is only useful if you visit 4+ paid attractions. The app is not needed.

  • Dating venues:not relevant.

  • Italian bank apps:often do not work abroad due to two-factor authentication.

Practical tips

  • Battery:apps consume power. Bring a power bank (20000 mAh) and a short cable.

  • Data:if you have roaming included (EU), use it. If not, buy an eSIM (Airalo, £10 for 5GB/30 days). Offline maps reduce consumption.

  • Notifications:disable push notifications from less important apps to save battery.

FAQ

Can I use Google Maps offline for buses?

Yes, but it doesn't show real-time schedules. Use Citymapper or Lothian Buses for those.

Which app is best for the weather?

The Met Office is the most accurate for the United Kingdom.

Do I need to download the castle app?

Yes, if you plan to visit it. The included audio guide saves you £3.50.

Is there an app to find public restrooms?

Yes, "Flush" (free) shows the nearest public restrooms, including those in museums and shopping centers.

Do bus apps accept contactless payments?

L'app di Lothian Buses sì (ricarichi il credito). Ma è più semplice pagare con carta contactless direttamente sull'autobus (2£ a corsa, senza app).

What do I do if I don't have battery?

Almost all pubs and cafes have outlets. Kindly ask. The central library (George IV Bridge) also has places with outlets.

The right apps

Holidays in Edinburgh are smoother if you have the right apps. No need to overdo it: with Google Maps (offline), Lothian Buses, Met Office, and HappyCow (if you're veg/vegan), you already have 90% of what you need. Download everything before you leave (using your home Wi-Fi) to save data when you arrive. And remember: apps help, but sometimes the best discovery is the one you make by getting lost without a screen, looking up. .
